The Truth About Hula Hoops
The Short:
If you can hoop on your tummy, then weighted heavy hula hoops are no longer a necessity for your hoop journey. Slightly weighted hula hoops are only appropriate for learning the rhythm of tummy hooping on your waist, and helping your core muscles get familiar with hooping through muscle memory. These hula hoops are not ribbed, or heavy weight, rather larger in diameter and slightly of weight compared to lightweight hula hoops.
Below we will explore more about why weighted hula hoops are not a good option.
Hooping on your tummy means you understand the rhythm of hula hooping and have basic core strength. Once you understand the rhythm you can begin to transition from a weighted heavy hoop to a lightweight HDPE or Polypro hoop. HDPE & Polypro hula hoops are best for learning all types of hoop tricks. Lightweight hoops are also the best type of hoop for workouts and all-around exercise.
The Long:
Why should I hoop with lighter hula hoops?
Picking the perfect hula hoop
Light weight hoops (Polypro & HDPE) truly and fully engage the body. Developmentally for all ages, lightweight hoops such as polypro offer the greatest benefits emotionally, physically, regulatory, academically, and socially. Such engagement expands and connects the mind to the body, increasing neurological ties and strengthening awareness internally and externally. Self esteem, balance, strength, spatial awareness, self-regulation are just a few facets of the self that sensationally benefit from an all-encompassing activity such as hula hooping.
Heavier weighted hoops do most of the work for you, spinning off of their own centripetal force thanks to weight. Heavy hula hoops do not offer a proper exercise for your muscles. Additionally, heavier weighted hoops bruise the body often and easily. Weighted hoops also restrict movement and self-expression through hoop manipulations and are typically too large of a hoop size for hoop tricks. Find your perfect hoop size
Your Developmental Specialist & Movement Advocate, Breezi, advises strongly against Heavy Hoops for Hoop Dance

1) Hoop Selection

Whether you desire a mega gnarly decorated hoop, or a plain hoop...this is the step you can't miss! What oh what hoop works best for you, and what size!?
Choose from PE & HDPE Beginner Hoops to popular UV reactive Polypro. Color options available for Polypro as well.
Hoop Tubing Info Page Here
1" PEX: [Black] Fabulous for the hooper that is down to chill with the hoop on his or her waist most of the time. Can be quite "heavy" for a hoop; the size and weight may limit ability to progress into the vast world of hoop tricks. Larger surface area makes tapes look stellar as ever and coils well, too. 37" and under in diameter is recommended and is also the Gnar limit.
3/4" PEX: [Black] Hands down best for beginners. The added few ounces mean worlds to the control and regulated speed offered by this tubing. Black in color, and a very small bit flexy, this tubing coils like a breeze just like 5/8" Polylpro but offers an experience comparable to 3/4" Polypro - transitioning just got real easy ;)
37" and under in outer diameter is best for PE hoops.
3/4" UV Polypro: [Clear] Best for polypro beginners, more chill and controlled hooping, and a bit slower flow. Gnar digs the swag; slower sweeping pull-flows offer more controlled manipulations. Dampened response time, stellar for learning new tricks.
37" and under is the recommended size for lightweight hoop dance.
5/8" UV Polypro: [Clear] Light weight, responsive, gnarly all around. Fabulous for quick finger-tricks, doubles, minis, and a feather-light experience. May be considered bouncy at 32-34".
34" in diameter is your recommended max size to avoid wonk.
1/2" UV Polypro: [Clear] Lighting fast, feather light, and ultra thin. No more than 30" OD, or else you may have a crazy noodle hoop
3/4" HDPE: [White] Loved by beginners, and even craved by professionals. A bit more of a 'spring' to HDPEs responsiveness than Polypro, HDPE also offers a bit more weight for added control and decreased speed of tricks. Creamy, and semi-translucent white, naturally
7/8 HDPE: [White] A beginners hybrid! Gnar's definite recommendation when you just are not sure, but are sure you prefer a bit of weight and thickness to your tubing and flow
2) Sanding or Grip

Sanding is a natural, and free, way to add gnarly grip and friction to your hoop. Why sand for grip? Because it helps your hoop hug to your skin and clothing, making your hoop less likely to fly off your body during manipulations.
Grip tape is wonderful as well, and very affordable. For a couple dollars add a grip-lining on the inside of your hoop, or a nice spiral for inner and outer grip. Inner-lined is most preferred.
Gnar also offers GRIP MORPH tape. The morphing tape is grip in and of itself; best for skin contact. Mega hand control.
3) Add Stellar Tapes
